Types of Unhealthy Foods

Most of the foods available to us today contain artificial colors, additives and preservatives, high amount of sodium, high corn syrups, trans-fat, artificial sweeteners, food dyes which not only raise LDL cholesterol levels (bad cholesterol) but also cause a rapid spike and drop in your blood sugar levels. Even worse, you may suffer from deadly and heart breaking diseases like cancer and paralysis.

1. Processed and cured Meat

Processed meats such as sausage, hot dog, salami, ham, cured bacon are high in sodium and saturated fats (harmful to human beings). They are preserved with chemicals such as sodium nitrite and potassium nitrite. They are found to create health conditions such as colon cancer. And who knows the quality of meat that goest in the process. Any fresh or rotten, leftover meat can be used in the manufacturing process. But you won’t see the differences because in the end, all of them are preserved with the chemicals.

2. Soft Drinks

Why don’t people understand that soft drinks (Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Fanta, Sprite to name some) are injurious to health? Business tycoons don’t care if their beverages are causing health problems. One cane of a soft drink (354 ml) contains about 33 grams of sugar. Too much of sugar can lead to higher blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Additionally, soft drinks contain high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, caffeine, caramel coloring, phosphoric acid and brominated vegetable oil. These ingredients have been attributed to the declining health of the people. These chemicals can lead to gout, kidney function decline, cirrhosis, ulcers and cancer. Instead opt for fresh juices. Buy a juice extraction machine and the fruits you like, and enjoy.

3. Sweetened Foods

Sweetened curds, sweetened drinks such as cane/packet juices, syrups, energy drinks, fancy coffee drinks, store-bought smoothies, sweet teas spike your blood sugar. They consist of refined sugars including high fructose corn syrup and dextrose. They are packed with artificial flavorings. They provide little-to-no nutritional value except that real taste feel.

4. Sugar-Free Foods

Sugar-free soda(diet), desserts, jams, biscuits, candies and many more actually contain artificial sweeteners to give the taste of actual sugar. The sweeteners are not absorbed by body and don’t increase blood sugar levels. But over-consumption of sweeteners alters the body’s ability to process real sugar, through changes in the gut microbiota and insulin levels.

5. Vegetables/Fruits with excessive pesticides

Excessive pesticides and insecticides can damage the brain and nervous system. They lead to cancer, disrupt body hormones, and lead to skin, eye, and lung irritation. It’s very difficult to detect these chemicals for normal consumers like us. We have to submit the food samples to the health lab if we want to figure out the truth. Even the organic products can’t be trusted these days. It’s the obligation of the government to strictly enforce the law defining the threshold limit of these chemicals in the vegetables and fruits.

6. Low/Reduced fat foods

Low/reduced fat yogurt, ice cream, peanut butter typically contains added sugar or artificial sweeteners to improve our taste. When the food company takes out the fat, they usually add a lot of sugar or man-made ingredients to achieve a similar taste.

7. Refined Grains

There are three parts of a grain: brain, germ, and endosperm. Refined grains remove the bran and germ, while whole grains preserve all three parts. Removing these parts also remove the dietary fiber and vitamins. The refined grains include white bread, white rice, most pastas. If these refined grains are mixed up with high amount of sugar and artificial dyes, imagine what they do to your body. These refined grain products include ramen noodles, pop tarts, cakes, packaged cereals, bagels, muffins to name some. They can have a negative impact on the blood sugar levels. Excessive consumption of refined grains has been linked to type 2 diabetics.

8. Most Frozen Meals

Frozen meals are overly processed, made with refined four, high in sodium, and full of additives and preservatives.

9. Deep Fried Foods

Deep fried meats, doughnut, french fries, onion rings, are deep fried in artery-clogging and cancer-causing trans fats. Avoid them.

10. Packaged/Canned Foods

Try to avoid any foods that are canned or come in packet even if they are whole grains, have low sugar contents and organics. They still have preservatives, additives and excessive amounts of sodium.
